The Fifth Element
Curator: Hasan Bülent Kahraman

Before Empedocles, Pre-Socratic Greek thinkers spoke merely of the four substances plumping one to another. Great civilizations prior to the Greeks, Babylonians and Egyptians, had also philosophized about the substances. Yet it was the Sicilian philosopher, Empedocles, conceptualizing the four substances as a whole and, for the first time, and qualified them with the word rhizomata,- “root” .

However, the word element belongs to the wisdom of Plato. Aristotle went further, adding a fifth element: ether.

Since than or, better, since an unknown time, people have been searching for the Fifth Element. And now it is contemporary philosophy, and contemporary popular culture to join the round and the quest. We name the fifth element, now, regarding our needs and to our satisfaction. But it is there as an unsolved problem.

This open-air exhibition first encompasses the Four Elements: earth, air, fire and water.

The Fifth Element is the sculpture itself.

Sculpture is what is realized and it is a synthesis of the Four Elements. The sculpture is that which is intellectual; it is what lives in us and lives in the sculpture.  It is the ether.

But sculpture is not only a matter of material. It is the material and beyond: therefore, it is the ethereal becuas it is beased on imagination. Sculpture is the substance and matter of the imagination based on the four elements.

And the sculpture is man himself. Man, who  looks at matter, seeks matter and analyzes matter. However, that man is also looking at himself, his history, the sculpture itself and beyond. Man is beyond very much like the sculpture itself. So art is: the given and the beyond; the material and the beyond.

The Fifth Element is a confrontation with the adventure that befalls earth, air, water, fire, and man over the ages, surpassing time and matter. It is a reckoning!

And, above all, it is matter and imagination: it is imagination and matter!
